This introductory guide supports planning; it does not replace inspection of the actual website and its data.

Begin with server responses

Check important pages for successful responses, redirect chains, and 404/500 errors. Record multi-hop redirects for important URLs.

Separate crawling from indexing

robots.txt, noindex directives, canonicals and XML sitemaps serve different purposes. A crawlable page is not necessarily indexed.

Review internal linking

Make important pages accessible through navigation and contextual links. Look for orphan pages and broken internal links.

Prioritize and measure

Prioritize by likely impact, affected pages and cost to fix, then re-check after deployment.
